Hello, friends among the stars. Welcome to my journal.
My name is Song Yan.
Today, my school held a self-directed learning group discussion.
A few of us sat together and took turns sharing what we had been working on recently. There were no grades and no standard answers. We simply listened to what the others had been thinking about.
I had originally planned to talk about an online meeting assistant system I have been working on.
The core idea is simple: while a meeting is taking place, the system turns meaningful remarks into visual images in real time, so the discussion does not remain only in sound and text, but can be immediately “seen.” Speakers do not need to issue special commands. The system decides for itself which remarks are worth turning into images and which can be skipped. The generated images can be pinned, sorted, and renamed. When the meeting is reviewed later, the entire discussion becomes a visual stream that can be browsed.
I have spent quite a lot of time on the interface and the decision-making logic. The starry background, the passing glow, the status lights, and the drag-and-drop organization all feel rewarding to build. They really do make remote discussions a little clearer.
But today, someone proposed another direction: using scientific thinking to change education, truly bringing different ways of thinking into the learning process instead of stopping at simply “transmitting knowledge.”
That sentence stayed with me for a long time.
After the group ended, I opened the development page for the meeting assistant again and looked through it. All the functions were still there, and the visuals still looked the way I liked them. But I suddenly felt that what I am currently making is more like presenting technology I already know in a more beautiful way. It improves the efficiency of “people who are already having meetings,” but it does not really touch the more fundamental questions: Why do some people never get the chance to think in better ways? Why is it so difficult for different perspectives to be seen, practiced, and preserved?
The idea about education made me much more interested.
If technology can help not by making an existing process a little faster, but by changing the way people think, even just a little, then that seems closer to what it means to “use technology to improve society.”
When I returned to the dormitory that evening, I did not continue editing the meeting system’s code.
I simply placed the sentence I had heard today alongside the thing I had originally been building in my notebook.
On one side was the visual stream I had already made.
On the other was an educational direction I still did not know how to begin.
I do not have an answer yet.
But at least the question has become clearer.
Good night.
