Hello, friends among the stars.

This morning, a university senior who lives in Huawei City asked me to meet with him.

I first met him in a technology community when I was in seventh grade. Even then, he was already building some remarkable things, such as scanning old furniture into editable models and using AI to complete damaged or missing parts.

Now he has actually turned it into a product.

Users can scan small objects from everyday life—cups, desk lamps, storage racks, and things like that. The system generates models that can be edited, shared, and used directly for manufacturing. He has even set up the server and a basic website.

I originally thought he wanted to ask me about models, protocols, or website architecture.

It turned out that he did not know how to enter the European and American markets.

It was not because the technology was beyond him.

It was because, after finishing the product, he discovered that the world already had many doors, and every door had someone guarding it.

Large platforms can bring traffic, but users have to use designated accounts, designated payment methods, and designated recommendation systems. User data has to be sent back. The platform decides the rules for visibility, and the commission rate can change at any time.

I asked him:

“If you left these platforms tomorrow, what could you take with you?”

He thought for a moment.

He could take the code.

He could take the models.

He could take the server.

He could take most of the product data.

But he could not take the users.

He could not take the reviews.

He could not take the people who had once discovered him through the platform but did not know where his actual website was.

If the platform pushed his product to the bottom of the list, he could buy advertisements again.

But if he did not want to pay, perhaps no one would be able to see it.

Yesterday, while working on our assignment for An Introduction to Interstellar Relations, I heard an alien researcher say: True freedom is not being able to leave a set of rules. It is not being forced to start from zero when you leave.

At the time, I was thinking about people.

When someone leaves their original city, school, job, or system, can they take their educational records, medical data, skill certifications, assets, and the chance to start over with them?

Today, I saw another version of the same question.

Products and people obviously cannot be compared directly. But they encounter the same problem: if all the relationships, trust, and points of entry you have accumulated are locked inside someone else’s system, you may appear to be able to leave, while in reality it is very difficult to truly do so.

The people who hold real power are not always the ones who order you to join.

Sometimes, they are the ones who can decide what you have left after you leave.

I did not immediately agree to build a website for my senior.

I only told him not to rush into asking how to enter the European and American markets.

First, make a list: if you had to leave any platform tomorrow, what would be the one thing you could not afford to lose?

Those are the things that should be kept in your own hands first.

I will stop here for today.
